Geraldine's Qualifications and Experience

Geraldine at workGeraldine has been practising as a Speech and Language Therapist since 1987. In that time she worked for three years as a Counsellor and Research Therapist.

She trained at City University and qualified as a Speech and Language Therapist in 1987. Since qualifying she has held several high profile posts. These included a research / tutors post at City University where she also co-ordinated and ran groups at the City Dysphasic Group. She was also part of the team of therapists who ran the intensive stammering groups.

"The sense of self shame and distress I felt at school as I struggled to make sense of the world and cope with learning was appalling. Everything was hard reading writing and understanding what was being said. My self esteem was poor and I hated school."


In 1990 she undertook a 3 year research project for the DOH where, in conjunction with Action for Dysphasic Adults (now Speakability).

She set up and ran a Counselling service in West London for people who had language disorders following strokes.

She evaluated the service and the results were published in 'Disability and Rehabilitation' (Vol 18, No.11, November 1996).

"My training in counselling and psychotherapy enable me to be more human and yet more robust in my therapeutic style."


Geraldine has worked as an Independent Speech and Language Therapist since 1997. She now has a busy practice based in North East London and Essex. She is also part of the Specialist Team of Teachers and Therapists based at Avon House Dyslexia Unit Woodford Green.

"My own experience of learning and education was very distressing but my personal triumph over these difficulties has given me a unique insight into the struggle of many of my clients. This has undoubtedly made me a far better speech and language therapist."


She regularly attends Special Educational Needs Tribunals as an expert witness and undertakes assessments for clients and Legal Firms who are pursuing negligence cases.

Geraldine contributes academically and professionally via regular written contributions to professional publications, practitioner forums and books on a variety of topics as well as making presentations at Conferences.
